Jennuine Design’s Somnus Sleep Set is the Answer to this Year’s Back to School Wardrobe

For a limited time, the Somnus Sleep Set is on sale for only $4.00 (USD)!! Also, head on over to Jennuine Design’s Facebook group for a discount code on any of her other patterns! I have my eye on the Viridian swimsuit myself!

Jennuine Design has just released their newest PDF sewing pattern, the Somnus Sleep Set. In Roman mythology, Somnus is the god of sleep whose sons are the bringers of dreams. Today, the Somnus Sleep Set is the bringer of all things comfort in a world where one may go days in their sleepwear… no? Just me?

This set has three options packed into one pattern, giving variety to your child’s “stay at home” capsule wardrobe. All kidding aside, in addition to the three options, the pattern has a wide size range from NB through to size 14! This is an exciting prospect to me as I watch my own daughter exponentially growing out of the trove of PDF patterns I purchased when she was a baby. If you’re a beginner, and up for tackling knits, this will be a great pattern to start with and one you can use for years.

Pattern Options

First off, this pattern is for knits with 25-40% stretch and you’ll need a knit with at least 40% stretch for the bindings and waistband. I used cotton/spandex with 40% stretch for everything.

Let’s take a look at the options:

  • Slim fitting, knee length tank tress
  • Tank and Shorts Set of which there are two options for the shorts and for each shorts option, you can decide to use 1″ elastic encased in a band or a yoga style band:
    • Culottes
    • Basic, tight fitting shorts

I was part of the tester team and sewed up the tank and basic shorts set using the yoga style waistband. I chose it as it’s a bit less fussy to sew and I wanted to use the most from the border print I used for the tank since I didn’t have that much of it.

I think the tight fitting shorts, since they’re so quick and easy to sew, would also be a great option to wear under a skirt or dress. I actually thought they looked a bit like bike shorts on my daughter which even had me thinking I could make the shorts with some athletic knit and maybe even purchase a chamois to sew into it…but that’s for some other pandemic creating endless amounts of down time.

One idea for the tank pattern pieces would be to make a shelf bra for the older girls. Just find a point somewhere on the torso to cut the tank at and add elastic to the bottom. Leave me a comment below if that’s something you’d like to see me try!

Pattern Features

This pattern includes everything I like to see in sewing pattern. It also includes a projector file – something new-ish to the sewing community and something that has really piqued my interest. I am not familiar with using a projector to *ahem* project the linework onto the fabric so cannot comment on how that file is set up.

PDF FILE FEATURES –
Layers: Yes
Paper Sizes: the pattern pieces in the PDF are 8.5″x11″ (US Letter). It is formatted so it also prints on A4 sized paper.
Print Shop Size Offered: Yes, A0 size.
“No Trim” Pages: No.
Other: Includes projector file.
Pattern pieces include notches for perfecting alignment, pattern pieces for waistbands and bindings, cut chart for waistband and elastic if one did not want to use the pattern pieces. There is not a cut chart for the bindings as there are notches required for alignment.
Instructions are illustrations (which I much prefer) vs photographs, and have great direction regarding printing, cutting, blending sizes, and general sewing tips for knits.

My Review, Blending Sizes, and Photos

I have to say this had to have been the easiest sewing pattern test I have done and it created a great fitting pattern. I always have to blend sizes for my children and it most always comprises of me having to go down a size in width using their actual size for height. My daughter’s measurements put her at a size 8 chest, waist, hips, and size 10 for height. I easily blended the pattern per the instructions and am really pleased with how it turned out, since a tight fitting pattern doesn’t have a lot of room for sizing errors.

This is also a great scrap buster believe it or not. I had purchased a border print a number of years ago thinking I was going to make my DD a dress. So I only had about 22″ of it because she was quite tiny when I bought it! It was enough to make the top and use the rest of it for the binding at the chest and the straps, as well as the yoga waistband. There isn’t going to be a more perfect time for digging into that fabric you thought you were going to save for a rainy day. And who wants to leave the house anyways?

This pattern is going to be a great staple for us, especially since we’re moving towards spring and summer here in Queensland. But don’t miss out on this easy to sew pattern, perfect for beginners, that will take your child from infancy until they’re giving you eye rolls to rival your own.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I was chosen as a pattern tester for the Somnus Sleep Set and therefore given the pattern only for the purposes of the testing. This blog review was unsolicited and opinions and recommendations are solely my own.
